Early SKiP announcement – Dr. Jessica Motherwell McFarlane, Ph.D.

Kicking off the final countdown (4 more days!) to contribute to our call for proposals, we are announcing some of the accepted proposals that made our initial call deadline. Drawing on a large pool of local and generous contributors that have agreed to share their innovative drawing practices, as well as reaching out to an international community joining us, its hard to hold back on on the amazing talent we are bringing together on June 24th.  There is still space and time to submit, and we are focusing on being as accessible and inter-disciplinary as possible so check it out!

Dr. Jessica Motherwell McFarlane, Ph.D.I’m pleased to share the announcement of our first collaborator, Dr. Jessica Motherwell McFarlane, Ph.D.  We met during the Visual practitioners meetup last year and we connected over the need for simple and effective sketching tools for her students to express themselves. On her amazing course blogs (The Diversity Companion) (The Gender Companion) she shares stories of her teaching and provides space online for her students to engage.  For her SKiP proposal she states…

“As a diversity and social justice instructor, I frequently ask students to write journal entries to reflect on difficult concepts in my course material. When I noticed how popular comics were becoming, I asked myself, “how can I introduce comics-sketches and “selfies” into students’ reflective process?” I could not have guessed how simple, fun and academically successful this innovation would be.”

Promising to pick up on our keynote speakers comic  focus, it will great to see practices in ‘sequential art’ playing out in the classroom.

    More updates coming soon!

  • Join us to disorient drawing on June 24th

We are approaching the final week for the SiP call for proposals, and are inviting you to join us, but how do you know that SiP is for you? Bringing together practitioners from a broad range of disciplines, means the common ground we share will be the practice of sketching itself, so yes drawing any form is central.  Education, Art and Design can come together in many ways, but what happens when the people do?

“Disorienting drawing”, was a term that caught my attention last week and as proposals come in, I feel it has some resonance for us. (enough to inspire the “disoriented” design below anyway) Many conferences aim to bring together well defined communities, but a challenge we are taking on is looking for cross sections between seemingly disparate groups.  (venn diagram forthcoming).

Sketching in Practice - Call for proposals open for one more week!
Sketching in Practice – Call for proposals open for one more week!

Each of the sessions proposed so far promises to showcase a unique approach to drawing. How sketching can be used to achieve deeper understanding for oneself, rapid doodling to generate creative solutions to difficult problems, or collaborative art as process to engage students and push learning forward are just a few.

Starting today we will begin posting some of the speakers that have joined us so far, to show this range and some of the activities you will experience at Sketching in Practice. Lets start the discussion now, lets begin to disorient drawing. ~ jason

  • Proposal Deadline Extension!

SKETCHING IN PRACTICE 2016 CALL FOR SUBMISSION

    Symposium on Thinking Visually

    Important dates:
Proposal submission deadline extended: Fri, April 29
    Notification date: May 15, 2016
    Symposium date: June 24, 2016

SKETCHING IN PRACTICE is a one-day symposium bringing together practitioners from a broad range of disciplines that think through drawing. In this experiential, full day gathering, practitioners will explore the fundamental question, what happens when we draw?  Participants can expect to learn and share ways of working, thinking, tools and techniques and will have the opportunity to work collaboratively.

We encourage paper and demo submissions that relate to the symposium topics, including the following:

    • Drawing to see. The use of drawing in unique fields to highlight information and/or knowing that is unobtainable through other means of documentation.
    • Drawing to communicate. The use of drawing in unique fields to communicate information and/or knowing that is unobtainable through other means.
    • The reemergence of drawing in disciplines such as design and anthropology.
    • Work that explores the dual role of words and images to express ideas, experiences and knowledge.
    • The experimental use of drawing to express the range of human experience.

The $20.00 registration fee will be waived for all accepted presenters. For all others, who are interested in attending, registration will open on May 02 2016 via the Sketching In Practice website [https://sketchpractice.ca/blog/].

Please see the website at https://sketchpractice.ca/blog/call-for-proposals/ for a full list of submission requirements. Preference will be given to proposals that are interactive and/or demonstrate unique ways of engaging the audience. All attendees are encouraged to bring their sketchbooks to share.

We thank-you for your interest and hope to see you there!
