DRAWN TO SEE: ETHNOGRAPHIC INSIGHT AND VISUAL ATTENTIVENESS
(a one-day field school with Dr. Andrew Causey)
Dr. Andrew Causey will lead us through drawing exercises as we practice ethnographic observations in public locations in downtown Vancouver. Participants will reflect on and discuss practices of observation in ethnographic research. We will also use this hands-on work to consider visual apprehension takes us beyond merely recording observations into active, interactional forms of ethnographic knowledge production.
The event is for people with no prior drawing experience, but with some prior training in the practice and theory of ethnography (such as advanced undergraduate and graduate students, or researchers from disciplines adjacent to anthropology). Prior to the event, participants will complete several initial exercises from Drawn to See.
The day begins with an introductory session, then we go out as a group to various locations where we will experiment together with exercises, led by Dr. Causey. At the end of our journey, we will convene for an in-depth debriefing discussion (and a catered meal).
